How to get a residence visa in Dubai
Naturally, if a company in Dubai employs you, the company (employer) is responsible for processing your residence visa and work permit. It is essential that you get the residence visa and work permit before you start working in Dubai; otherwise, you’re violating the law, and it is a punishable offense. Dubai offers different types of residence visas, which are usually valid over a 3-year period.
Requirements for Dubai residence visa
- Completely fill out the application form.
- Present several passport-size photographs; the passport photographs must not be older than three months from the application date.
- The employee’s original passport with a copy
- Copy of a valid company card
- The commercial license of the employer or company
- Present a valid health certificate from a certified health center within Dubai
- Pay the application fee
- The entry permit issued by the Ministry of Labor to the employer/company
Note: if your medical tests show positive to any form of terminal/infectious disease, you’ll be deported immediately. Health situations that are checked for include: chest X-ray, blood tests for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, leprosy, and tuberculosis.

How to get a work permit (Labor Card) in Dubai
This is also supposed to be done by your employer. Below are the requirements and steps to get this permit.
- The applicant’s photographs
- Valid Passport
- Residency Visa
- The applicant’s health certificate
- Up to three (3) copies of the employment contract; one is for the employee (applicant), one for the employer/company, and the last copy for the Ministry of Labor
- Applicant’s education certificates
- Other evidence to prove to the applicant’s professionalism claim
- The employer’s or company’s valid trade license
The steps:
Your employer takes the required documents to the Ministry of Labor to get them approved. Once approved, the employee is given an Entry Permit visa (pink visa) to enter Dubai legally. This permit lasts for two (2) months and is renewable for a max. of two times.
Once in Dubai, your employer then pushes for your Labour Card (Work Permit). Free Zones are issued an ID card that is similar to a Labour Card. Dubai’s labor card and ID for free zones are valid for two years.
